The former Empress of Iran, Farah Pahlavi, celebrates today her 75th birthday. Born as Farah Diba, she was born on October 14th, 1938 in Tehran (Iran). Farah was the only child of Captain Sohrab Diba and his wife, Farideh Ghotbi.
She received her elementary education at Tehran’s Italian School and French Jeanne d’Arc School. Upon finishing her studies at the Lycee Razi, she pursued an interest in architecture at the École Spéciale d’Architecture in Paris, where she was a student of Albert Besson.
In the summer of 1959 she met Shah Mohammed Reza and on November 21st the couple announced their engagement. The wedding took place at Marble Palace on December 20th, 1959. Farah wore a gown designed by Yves Saint Laurent and the Noor-ol-Ain Diamond tiara. The Shah and Farah Pahlavi have four children: Prince Cyrus Reza (born October 31st 1960), Princess Farahnaz (born March 12nd 1963), Prince Ali Reza (born April 28th 1966-died January 4th 2011) and Princess Leila (born March 27th 1970-died June 10th 2001).
On October 26th, 1967 the Shah celebrated his coronation and Queen Farah received the title of Shahbanou (Empress). After the Islamic Revolution, she and her husband decided to leave the country. They departed Iran on January 16th, 1979 and moved to Egypt. Six days later the imperial couple departed to Marrakesh. During their exile the Shah and Shahbanou lived in Bahamas, Cuernacaca (Mexico), the United States and Panama. In March 1980 they moved again to Egypt where Shah died on July 27th.

At present Farah Pahlavi lives between Paris and the USA. She has created the Prince Ali Reza Foundation in honour of her late son to promote the Iranian studies.
